The 4th Deputy Speaker of the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) Parliament, Hon. Billay Tunkara has asserted that the sub-regional bloc has done lot over the period and it is about time they brought the citizens of the community to be abreast of those achievements.
According to him on Monday, 26 May 2025, the parliament would dedicate that day for the celebration of the day as there would be a robust debate at the plenary to reflect on the past of the bloc and the journey so far.
In an interview with EcowasNewsOnline.com he pointed out that, “we would look at where did we go wrong and the prospect of moving into the future. ECOWAS has done a lot and it’s an avenue for the citizens to know”, he emphasised.
Again, despite the three Sahel Countries, (Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger) leaving the bloc, I believe in integration - power lies in integration and unity; the remaining twelve states we would ensure that we are united and together so that the dream of integration that was envisaged by our founding fathers to ensure free movement of goods and services are achieved as we also work towards a single currency, he added.
By achieving a common currency, he said anyone moving from Accra-Ghana to Abuja - Nigeria does not need to change their cedis to Naira to be able to do business here; you should be able to use our expected common currency the ECO.
If the EU has done it, we can do it better and I believe that in the inter Africa continent, ECOWAS is a role model.
